How is already June 10th? May was a bit of a blur and now my kids are almost done with school. Wow, where does the time go? Anyway, I’ve been lucky enough to read some great books since my last book post. Below you’ll find my book list volume 2. I really enjoyed every book in this list. Hopefully you will too!
Little Fires Everywhere – Celeste Ng
This book was better than I anticipated. I really enjoyed it. My mom gave it to me and I wasn’t impressed with the synopsis. The book jacket describes it like this: A riveting novel that traces the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. For whatever reason it just didn’t catch my attention. Boy, I’m glad I was wrong. It’s so much more than they way it’s described. It’s about mothers and daughters and the complicated relationships between them, it’s about race, privilege and the age old question of what defines someone as a mother? Is it biology or something else?
I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s also begin adapted as a series on Hulu staring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. I’m looking forward to watching it. Little Fires Everywhere
The Woman in the Window – A.J. Finn
If you like thrillers this a good one! A friend recommended it to me and I’m glad she did. A woman named Anna, who suffers from Agoraphobia, hasn’t left her Manhattan townhouse in a year. One night she thinks she witnesses a murder in the townhouse across the park. The plot is nothing new. Think the old Hitchcock movie Rear Window, but the characters and interesting and it was definitely a page turner. I read it in just a few days so I could find out who did it!?
This one is also being adapted into a movie coming out this Fall staring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman and Julienne Moore. Can’t wait to see it! The Woman in the Window
The Alice Network – Kate Quinn
This one was one of my favorites! If you like WWII historical fiction you’ll like this book. In the aftermath of WWII a young woman named Charlie St. Clair goes searching for her lost cousin who disappeared in France during the war. She ends up enlisting the help of Eve Gardiner a reluctant older woman who was part of The Alice Network, a group of female spies during WWI. The story bounces back and forth between 1915 and 1947 explaining how Eve came to be a spy and why Charlie thinks she can help her find her cousin. The Alice Network
Where’d You Go Bernadette? – Maria Semple
This is a great, quirky, fun read about losing sight of doing what you love. Fifteen year old Bee convinces her parents that if she gets straight A’s they will go on a family trip to Antarctica. Bee makes good on her promise, but a few days before the trip chaos ensues and her mother, Bernadette, disappears. Everyone including Bee’s father thinks Bernadette is gone for good, so its up to Bee to put the pieces together and figure out where she went and why. This is also being adapted into a movie staring Cate Blanchette as Bernadette. Watch the trailer below. Where’s You Go Bernadette?
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid
This was the last book I read this month. It is written by Taylor Jenkins Reid who also wrote Daisy Jones and The Six. I wrote about Daisy Jones and The Six in my last book post you can read it here. Even though they are by the same author these two books are completely different. Daisy Jones is about a rock band in the 70’s. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is about an aging film star from the 50’s who is writing her memoirs.
Evelyn Hugo is ready to tell her life story to unknown journalist Monique Grant. Monique is unsure why she chooses her, but as Evelyn tells her story about becoming a Hollywood star and everything she did to get there, Monique learns that they do in fact have a connection. PS – it appears as though Reese Witherspoon has also gotten her hands on the rights to Daisy Jones and The Six and will be making it into a limited series for Netflix.
