Say hello to my navy and yellow wool plaid skirt. Yes, I know it’s almost Spring (thank god!) but I’m trying to squeeze in the last of my cold weather clothes before it’s too late.
This time of year is like a black hole when it comes to fashion. It’s not Spring yet, but most of the really cold weather is behind us (hopefully). The problem with this time of year is what to wear? It’s not quite sundress weather yet, but you also don’t need 27 layers of clothing.
I know most people would rather not be wearing wool right now. I contemplated making a wool suit (back in January) but by the time I got around to making it, it seemed very out of season. So, since it isn’t sundress weather yet I figured a wool skirt would be a happy medium.
Making a Navy and Yellow Wool Plaid Skirt
This skirt was originally going to have navy blue feather trim around the bottom, but after going back and forth over it I decided against it. I have to say, it did look very cute, but it would be something that I wouldn’t wear very often. That being said, I decided to hang on to the feathers for another day.
You also run the risk of looking like a Vegas Showgirl when you wear feathers, so you need to do it moderation. I made a black feather clutch last winter that is subtle enough to carry but not make you look outrageous.
I did put a flounce on it which I have done here, here and here. Even though I have done this multiple times I still like the way it looks.
I used Mccall’s pattern 3830 and cut the shortest option to leave room for the flounce. It’s a very easy pattern. I also opted not to line it. Even though it’s wool, it’s not too scratchy and I can always wear something underneath if I need to.
I bought about 5 yards of this fabric on Etsy, so I will hopefully be making the suit I mentioned above next winter.
Styling a Navy and Yellow Wool Plaid Skirt
It was pretty cold and rainy when I took these pictures. That is why I’m wearing my Hunter boots. I don’t love the way they look in the photos to be honest. I’m not very tall and I think the boots make me look short, but it was better than standing in the rain in a pair of heels.
The blazer is from J Crew and I bought it a few years ago. Last I checked they were having a sale on blazers so if your in the market for one you should check them out.
Leather Clutch
If you’re new here, I design and sell a line of leather clutches. I am carrying the blue one in these photos. They come in navy, black, red and gold, and can be purchased in my Etsy shop. You can also have them personalized for an additional cost.
Thanks for reading. How your having a good week!
