I’ve spent the better part of the last five and half months at home. As have most people in the US. I will say one of the few good things that has come out of this for me is more time to read. Because I have had more time to read, I have had the opportunity to read stuff I might not normally pick. So here I am to deliver my latest book list volume 5.
Book List Volume 5
My book list volume 5 is a bit of a mix bag. Some historical fiction, YA, and some rom com. YA and rom com aren’t my usual go to genre, but overall I did enjoy most of them. I’m currently reading this which is VERY good. I’m about halfway through, so I’ll put it on the next book list post.
The Parisians – Marius Gabriel
I found this book really fascinating! It’s a historical fiction story that takes place in France during WWII. It focuses on three main characters who lived in, worked at or spent lots of time socializing at the Ritz Hotel in Paris. Designer Coco Chanel lived in the Ritz during the Nazi occupation and was a Nazi sympathizer (I had no idea). Olivia Olsen is an American who works at the Ritz as a chambermaid and becomes involved with the French resistance. Arlette-léonie Bathiat was a french actress know as “Areletty” and was also a Nazi sympathizer. They way the lives of these three women are intertwined during the was is very intriguing. I thought it was a great book, and I highly recommend if you like historical fiction.
The Bette Davis Club – Jane Lotter
This was an easy fun read that is perfect for the beach! After her niece leaves her fiance at the altar her luck Aunt Margo is offered $50,000 from her niece’s mother and her estranged hollywood producer half-sister, to bring her back. With a cranky jilted fiance MArgo sets off on a cross country road trip in a 1955 MG convertible to track down her niece and some valuable stolen property. This was another enjoyable fun easy read.
I Owe You One – Sophie Kinsella
I have read a lot of Sophie Kinsella’s books. For whatever reason I find it very fun to read British rom com fiction. Sophie Kinsella is most know for her Shopaholic books which I haven;t read. I like her one off romantic comedy books much better. This is about Fixie Far (her characters always have great names). Who always wants to “fix” everything for everyone else, always putting her own needs last. When she rescues a Sebastian’s laptop from being ruined in a coffee shop he is indebted to her and give her an IOU. What follows is a sweet story about how to stand up for yourself even when it might hurt those around you. This book was a quick easy read, but I definitely liked some of her other stories better like this one and this one.
This book took me a while to finish. It’s a YA book and I don’t normally read these types of books. I guess I just can’t relate to teenages very well. #tooold However I did finish it and I’m glad I did. It’s a sweet love story about two kids who go to an elite private school in Manhattan where neither of them fit in. Jack’s family owns an old school local deli in the Village that struggles to keep its doors open. Pepper’s family owns a big new chain of burger restaurants (think Shake Shack). When Pepper’s family is accused of stealing a grilled cheese recipe from Jack’s family deli a twitter war ensues. It’s cute and easy to read but not very relatable to me.
I enjoyed this book. It takes place in the Bay Area which makes me nostalgic for when I used to live there. Stella is a woman with Asperger’s whose one true love is Math. The idea of being physical with men freaks her out. When she decides it’s time for her to learn how to be with an man and enjoy it she hires an escort named Michael. She thinks she can learn how to like kissing and sex if she has a teacher. When she shows up to their first encounter with a lesson plan Michael realized Stella is no ordinary client. This is another good light read to take to the beach.
