DIY Brown Wool Skirt // The Sherlock Holmes Skirt

This DIY brown wool plaid skirt is the first Fall-ish thing I have made this season. I apologize for being MIA recently. My kids went back to school, well a hybrid version on school, in September and there has been a big learning curve. Anyone out there who is navigating virtual school while trying to do anything else I hope you know you are a rock star, and I am right there with you. Also, l want to give a shout out to all the teachers, school administrators and support staff who are making this happen. I can’t imagine all the juggling you must be doing right now so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I like the way this skirt turned out. I have made this skirt pattern a lot lately. Like 5 or 6 times already. Admittedly, I struggle with sewing during the Fall/Winter. Summer dresses are my favorite thing to make, but I don’t really wear dresses in the winter. Especially now that no one is really going anywhere. Also, I live in NJ and our winters are cold, so there in not a lot of dress sewing happening during the Winter.

I am going to try and make some pants again this winter. I have have talked about my struggles making pants here. However, I bought some great fabric that would make a really cute pair of pants, so I’m going to try again.

I’ve also started making more handbags again. Zipper pouches used to be my jam. It was one of the first things I learned to sew. I have to say I have made some really cute bags recently. I’ll post them soon so stay tuned.

Fabric – DIY Brown Wool Skirt

The silhouette of this skirt is great. However, since I had made so many of them I thought I should make something different. Minerva.com kindly gifted me this beautiful fabric, so I really wanted to make something special. It’s wool suiting which I love. I have a hard time finding nice wool fabric so when I saw this I was very excited! My first thought was to make a suit, but I thought it would be impractical, only because I really have not where to wear a suit. I went round and round trying to decide on what to make and then I decided to make yet another version of my favorite skirt. Who cares if I have this skirt in a bunch of different fabrics? It fit’s great and it’s very flattering on so why not?

Pattern – DIY Brown Wool Skirt

The skirt and flounce are self drafted. I created it from this skirt refashion. It is a very easy pattern to make and comes together fast. You could also swap out the flounce for a ruffle like I did here on the skirt of this dress, or play around with the length. I skirt pattern comes a little past my knees and the flounce is 9″ long.

It didn’t occur to me at first, but when I finished the skirt and put it on, it immediately made me think of Sherlock Holmes. This might have something to do with the fact that my daughter and I just watched Enola Homes on Netflix. I highly recommend it. It’s a great family friendly movie about Sherlock Holmes’s little sister Enola It stars Millie Bobbie Brown, who I think is adorable. Anyway, the colors and subtle plaid definitely give off a Sherlock Holmes kind of vibe. All I’m missing is the magnifying glass and the hat.

Styling

I paired the skirt with a pair of nude peep toe shoes, and I simple camel colored sweater. The bag I bought recently at Amazon. It’s apparently the new “it” bag. It’s called the dumpling bag. This I believe is the original and a bit spendy, but this one, this one and this one are identical and much more reasonably price. I love the name “dumpling” it cracks me up because that is exactly what it looks like.

Thanks for reading. I hope you are all having a good day!
