I hope you are all off to a good week this week. Me, not so much. Not sure why, but I had a really difficult time getting organized earlier this week. It could be because of daylight savings (most likely) or because Mercury is in Retrograde right now. Honestly, between you and me, I don’t even know what that means, but I thought I would throw that in there because it seems like the excuse everyone is using right now for things not going your way. Anyway, because I can’t seem to get it together this week I’m going to keep it simple and tell you about this classic wool camel skirt and vintage Sargent Pepper’s coat.
Not a St. Paddy’s Day Post
I actually had a totally different post lined up for this week. It was going to be St. Patrick’s themed and everything. I made a green leather half circle bag. The tutorial written up and everything, and then I scrapped it.
I just hated the bag. Actually it was fine, but in my opinion, it was just really boring. I tired to come with an idea that would make it stand out, but at the end of the day I just didn’t like it.
I was feeling all this pressure to make some really cool St. Paddy’s day content because, well St. Paddy’s Day in coming up. Even before I came up with the bad bag idea I was going to make a cute green eyelet dress, which I might still make, but it didn’t happen in time. Ugh what I am trying to say is that there is nothing about this week’s post that relates to St. Paddy’s Day and I’m fine with that. Sometimes being creative can be really hard.
Classic Wool Camel Skirt – Pattern
I made this wool camel skirt back when I was still taking sewing lessons, which was about 5 years ago. It’s simple, stylish and even for a beginner it was very easy to make. I used Mccalls pattern 3341. It’s a skirt pattern that comes in 5 different length options. I have used this pattern a lot. I made my plaid ruffle skirt, and my seersucker flounce skirt both of which I wear regularly. It’s super versatile and can be hacked to make all different kids of designs.
Classic Wool Camel Skirt – Fabric
I bought the fabric for this at Joann’s. They used to carry nice wool fabric, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. I was looking for more of it this past winter and all they had was this cheap felt wool blend. Anyway, the fabric sewed up easily and I lined it with a turquoise lining. I also decided to sew some black bias tape around the hem for a little contrast. It’s a great little skirt, and I have definitely got a lot of wear out of it.
Vintage Sargent Pepper’s Coat
Did you ever play the game “In My Grandmother’s Attic” when you were little? You play with a group of people and take turns listing all of the things you might find in your grandmother’s attic in alphabetical order. Well you can add this coat to your list because that is exactly where I found it.
I’ve had this coat for a long time. I was in high school when I found it. I wore it all winter long even though it was not warm at all. So I froze my ass off, but it didn’t matter because I thought I looked so cool, and that’s what really important right? #sarcasm
I recently discovered it again in the back of our hall closet. It was put aside with the intention of taking it to a tailor and having it relined. I had already bought some hot pink lining, and also set aside a bunch of brass buttons. The original buttons were black and they were pretty beat up and falling off so I finally swapped them out. I haven’t had it relined yet, and I still think I am going to have a tailor do it. The fabric is so old and fragile I’d be afraid of damaging it. I’ll do another post when it’s done so stay tuned to see how it turns out.
Thanks for reading. I hope you are off to a better week than me. I’m sure I will get it together by the time I post this. Otherwise it’s going to be a long week.
