I love Kate Spade. I do. I love the style and cut of everything they make. It’s very much in line with my style, simple and classic. But what I love most about Kate Spade clothes is the fabric. They always have the best, brightest and cutest prints. Even after Kate Spade herself sold the company the brand still stayed true to the original style (phew). When I found this beautiful Kate Spade fabric I knew I needed to make something Kate Spade-esque with it. I tended up making this amazing Kate Spade skirt and bag using McCALLS m7604/Butterick B6285 pattern combined.
I was browsing online for who knows what when I found this Kate Spade tablecloth. Yep that’s right I made this Kate Spade skirt out of a tablecloth! The fabric is linen and great to sew with. I loved it so much I bought two more tablecloths and made myself a pink leather bamboo handle tote with a matching lining. (Tote bag tutorial coming soon!) The fabric just screams Spring/Summer in the cutest most polite way possible. Some people might think the print is a bit loud, but I think its perfect!
And if that wasn’t enough Kate Spade I went to Amazon (where i buy just about everything) and bought this tablecloth and this one! How beautiful are both of these patterns? You are going to be able to spot me a mile away with whatever I make out of both of theses gorgeous prints!
This project was a bit of a pattern hack, which is something I don’t normally do. I’m a total rule follower when it comes to certain things and sewing is definitely one of those things. I feel like patterns come with instructions for a reason and why rock the boat? Honestly, I’ve tried to hack patterns in the past. I always have this idea in my head of what it will look like, and it never turns out the way I planned. I always feel like I failed and wasted a bunch of time. Which is very frustrated and counterproductive. There are so many amazing sewing bloggers out there that have this uncanny ability to put different patterns together and the results are amazing! I’m very envious of their talent, in a good way. I did manage to pull off a small hack with this skirt, so I’ll keep trying.
I used McCALLS m7604 for this, which has an elastic waistband. Halfway through I decided I wanted to put a zipper in which requires a non-elastic waistband and a hook and eye closure on it. I decided to used the waistband pattern from Butterick B6285. I used the Butterick pattern to make my palm print skirt here. I am so thrilled with how the skirt turned out I am going to make a matching top so it looks like a dress. I hope Kate Spade would approve!
