I have a secret I need to share. I’m addicted to anything with a palm print on it. Palm print is everywhere especially now that the weather is warming up, and I love it. I can’t get enough of it. Just when I think I’ve reached my limit I see something new and I fall in love all over again.
Every year for Oscars weekend go to LA for a girls trip. While we don’t actually attend the ceremony (someday, fingers crossed!). However, we always have brunch in the Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hill Hotel. One of my best friends happens to work at the hotel, and let me tell you it’s the BEST people watching ever!
If you have ever been to the hotel or seen photos of it you’ll recognize it’s signature wallpaper. Below is a photo of the wallpaper in the hotel’s Fountain Coffee Room. It was designed exclusively for the hotel by Hollywood decorator Don Lopez in the early 1940’s. You can read all about the history of the famous wallpaper here.
Tommy Bahama designs two versions of this iconic print Outdoor Swaying Palms Fabric and Outdoor Island Hoppin Emerald Fabric. The only difference between the two fabrics is the size of the print. The Swaying Palms is larger. I have purchased more yards of both versions than I care to admit, but l really love it. It’s great fabric to sew with and and you can make anything out of it. In addition to this skirt I have made some tote bags that I will share here soon. It also makes great home decor items like pillows, curtains and shower curtains.
This year when I went to LA I decided to make myself a skirt out of the Swaying Palms to wear to brunch. I used Buttrick’s B6285 pattern. It’s an easy pattern and once I figured out the double pleats the skirt came together very fast. I skipped the pockets, because I was on a time crunch to finish it before I left, but I don’t think you need them. The skirt has a full silhouette, and the pockets might make it look bulky.
