Yep more ruffles…I know I can’t help it. They are just too fun to wear! I can’t get enough, and as far as I’m concerned you can never have too many ruffles. This pink gingham skirt has quickly become one of my summer wardrobe staples. It’s cute comfortable and it isn’t shorts, which is good because if you have been reading any of my posts this summer you know I don’t like shorts.
I have been going on and on this Summer about this pattern, McCalls 8097. I have yapped about it in this post, this post and this one. Now this pink gingham skirt isn’t made from the 8097 pattern, but I took the idea of the tiered ruffle from it.
Pattern
The pattern I used for this skirt is New Look 6193. I have used this pattern before as well. A lot of the dresses I have made this summer have used this as the skirt with some kind of additional hack..usually a ruffle.
So the Mccall 8097 has a few variations for the skirt. One of which is a tiered ruffle. All this means is that you sew the ruffle directly onto the outside/right side of the skirt instead of the wrong side. This way you see the top and bottom of the ruffle instead of just the bottom. This also means you need to finish both edges of the fabric to make it look pretty.
This style of tiered ruffle is very popular at the moment. You see lots of flowy dresses and skirts with multiple tiered ruffles everywhere. It’s not difficult to create, but can be time consuming especially on a dress like this with all these ruffles. It didn’t take too long to create it on this pink gingham skirt, but I would be hesitant to make something like this.
Fabric
I bought this fabric a few summers ago from fabric.com. They still have it in stock as well as a bunch of other colors. It’s very inexpensive which means it very thin fabric. You definitely need to line it, but it sews up easily so I have no complaints about how thin it is. I’m about to buy this lilac color because I have a pair of plaid lilac shoes that I bought on sale at J. Crew last summer, and I have NOTHING to wear with them. I know it probably sounds ridiculous to make a dress just to wear with a pair of shoes, but what can I say…that’s how I roll.
Styling – Pink Plaid Skirt
I dress this skirt down when I wear it. Just a white tank top and flip flops. I dressed it up for the photos, but it’s definitely more of a casual skirt. The pink shoes are from old from Banana Republic, and the tank top is from Amazon, and how cute is this little straw clutch? My sweet friend Carolline gave it to me for Christmas. Aren’t the eyelashes too cute?
Keep your eyes peeled for the plaid lilac creation. Not sure what its going to be but I’m sure it will have a ruffles.
