Sewing With Piping – Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July week!  Not sure what your plans for the holiday are, but we will be spending the week at the lake where there will be lots of boating, swimming, grilling, BBQ’ing and of course fireworks!  I made this red, white and blue ruffle skirt just for the occasion.  If this plaid fabric doesn’t scream Happy 4th of July, I don’t know what does. I’ve made a few ruffled skirts on the blog, but I upped my sewing game this time around by using navy blue piping on all the seams.  Sewing with piping is really very easy and makes clothes look more polished.

I used Mccalls pattern 3038 and added the self-drafted flounce.  I have gotten so much use out of this pattern.  The pattern is literally falling apart.  It’s been taped so many times I’m amazed I can still use it #barely.  I have used the skirt pattern and added flounce to make my Chanel inspired skirt and also my red and white seersucker skirt. I’ve only used piping one other time on a pair of pants . You can check out the post here.  It’s very easy but slightly more time consuming.  The idea is that you sandwich the piping in between the two pieces of fabric you are sewing together.

I recommend sewing the piping to one piece of fabric and then sewing the two pieces of fabric together.  That way you don’t run the risk of the piping slipping in between the fabric.

Fabric

I bought this fabric from Joann, and believe it or not it was the only red, white and blue fabric I could fine that didn’t have cheesy stars & stripes all over it.  Not only is it the perfect color scheme, but the fact that it is plaid makes it feel even more 4th of July appropriate!

I hope you all have a fabulous holiday week!  I’m looking forward to spending the 4th in my new skirt with a drink in hand to celebrate!

Thanks for reading. Hope your July 4th is filled with fireworks and lots of good food.
