Holiday Inspired Simple Strip Skirt and Learning How to Sew

Holiday Inspired Simple Stripe Skirt and Learning How to Sew

Who loves to sew raise your hand?! Growing up in a family of women who sewed never made me want to learn. Keep reading if you’d like to know what changed my mind, and how I made this holiday inspired simple stripe skirt.

My mom made a lot of our clothes and all of our Halloween costumes when I was young.  I have an older sister and every year she and I had matching costumes. One year it was Gypsies, the next Pirates, then Witches…whatever was popular at the time for our age. I hated it. Every October the stores were filled with the coolest costumes, and every year I would beg my mom the buy me one and she always said no. It wasn’t until we were older and decided to be punk rockers that my mom gave up on the costumes.

Needless to say I never wanted to learn how to sew.  Fast forward many years later. My mom bought herself a new sewing machine and for some reason thought I would like the old one. It sat in my basement for a while. I was a stay at home mom with two little kids and time on my hands. One day something clicked and I thought “how hard could it be?”

After a few years sewing lessons and a lot of youtube tutorials and here we are. This holiday inspired simple stripe skirt is one of the first pieces of clothing I learned to sew. Read on to learn more.

Enjoy!

I made this skirt in December for a holiday event. I have had this fabric sitting in my stash for a while. When I showed it to my mom she said I had a dress made from the exact same fabric when I was little.  Does that mean I have the style of a 5 year old?  I like to think I have had great taste since I was a kid (wink, wink).

Bottom line is I’m very happy with how the skirt turned out.

Pattern

I used McCall’s 3830 pattern for this skirt. It has and option to put belt loops on, but I decided to skip it. I think the skirt is too dressy to wear with a belt.  Like the post title says it a simple skirt. It sewed up very easily. If you are looking for a beginner level pattern I highly recommend this one. It’s a great one to start with.

Fabric

I purchased this fabric at a local fabric store here in NJ. It sat in my stash for a while. That usually happens when I buy fabric. It takes me a while to find the right pattern to match the fabric. I’ve had this for a least a year,  so I’m glad I finally found a use for it! When I finally made this and showed it to my mom she told me I had a dress made out of the same fabric when I was 5. So, either I dress like a 5  year old, or I’ve had  impeccable style since I was young. I’m going with the latter.

If your interested in learning some sewing techniques I hope you’ll come back and keep reading. This is my inagural psot so stay tuned for more tips and  tutorials.

PS –  because this is my first blog post I’m still getting comfortable with having my picture taken. In this last photo I’m giving you all my best Blue Steel without laughing.

Thanks for reading. I hope your off to a good week!
