Want to look good no matter what? Wear something navy. Maybe I’m biased, but in my opinion it’s the best color. It looks good on everyone and it goes with every other color. Navy and white is classic, navy and orange is bold, navy and green is the epitome of preppy. No matter what your style navy works for every occasion. If your not the bride you can’t wear white to a wedding. Yellow to a funeral? Probably not, but navy always has your back. It’s the most versatile color out there. Dress it up or down. Day or night navy always works. Heck, you could even wear it to the Oscars. Remember this one?
I saw this dress in the Boden catalogue and I immediately liked it. Why you ask? Not only is it navy, but throw in pink and you’ve got me. Hook, line and sinker, I’m sold.
To make my version of the dress I used Mccalls pattern 8343 and this great navy double ponte knit fabric from Mood Fabrics. Not only does it stretch, and let’s be honest who doesn’t love clothing that stretches, but its nice and thick. Unfortunately they don’t carry it on online. I purchased mine in their New York store, but any mid-weight knit or woven fabric would work.
I purchased this grosgrain ribbon on Etsy to mimic the trim on the dress. I wish I had made a ribbon belt for it, and I still might. I think a belt would dress it up a little more. If I had it to do over again I would also have made my dress an a-line dress instead of a pencil dress, but I do like the way it looks. Honestly, I like the Boden one a little better, and that’s ok. Overall I am happy with the way my dress turned out.
One of the things I love about sewing is that you are always learning. Even if your creation didn’t turn out the way you envisioned it, you always come away with new knowledge to use next time around.
All the changes aside, know what I like best about my version? That its navy, and you can never go wrong with navy.
